I Will Not Be Silenced
I've been sitting here for the last forty minutes or so wondering how I was going to handle this news I am about to share with you, here on The Limer Lounge. While diplomacy would seem to be the preferred method of handling this information, I'm just not sure I have it in me at the moment. Perhaps my opinions will change the more I learn about this particular turn of events. I doubt it, but there is a slim chance.

Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter released the following today:

Dick Wolf has finalized casting for his new NBC series "Conviction," adding a trio of thesps -- including former "Law & Order: SVU""Law & Order: SVU" star Stephanie March.

J. August Richards ("Angel") and Jordan Bridges ("Mona Lisa Smile") also are onboard in key roles for the skein, which has just starting lensing in Gotham. Walon Green and Rick Eid wrote the pilot and will exec produce with Wolf.

March is reprising her "L&O" role as Alexandra Cabot. She'll serve as bureau chief in "Conviction," which will revolve around young assistant district attorneys.

Richards will play a snobby attorney who's trying to claw his way to the top.

Bridges is set to play a well-connected lawyer who leaves a private law firm to work for the DA's office.

Unlike most Wolf shows, "Conviction" won't be a straight procedural. Producer calls the skein a "charactercedural."

Wolf Films is producing "Conviction" in association with NBC Universal Television Studio.

The following response to this news is cut for the benefit of my flisters who are SM/AC fans...

I will not be watching one miniscule iota of a nanosecond of "Conviction". Not.one.

I don't care. You know, I used to be an SM/AC fan. I did. I had an A/O cell phone cover made up and everything. And yes, I did miss the episodes leading up to Alex's departure due to my illness and only got caught up on them earlier this year.

The key words, though, are used to. You know what ruined her for me? Casey Hate. Pure and simple.

The vitriol leveled at Casey Novak (and at DN by extension) at first confounded me and then enraged me. After all, Stephanie March had chosen to leave her role as Alexandra Cabot to pursue a career in film. She was not fired. She was not "replaced". She chose to leave of her own free will. But the backlash against DN and Casey Novak seemed to paint a different picture. One in which either DN or CN was responsible for the loss of Alex Cabot.

This is never something I bought into.

However, I did buy into Casey Novak. Even before I knew of Casey Hate, I loved Casey. She was so accesible, so down-to-Earth, so much more likeable, so much less cold and standoffish. She was flawed and real and still learning and that made her infinitely more interesting in my book. So I started to look around for info on both the character and the actress.

Which is when I discovered Casey Hate. In the history of Law & Order, all franchises, has there ever been such complete hatred for an ADA, particularly for one that was introduced after another ADA left? I mean, it's not a new concept. Robinette was replaced by Kincaid who was replaced by Ross who was replaced by Carmichael...blah blah blah. Cabot, herself, replaced Carmichael on SVU. Why, then, so much hatred for Casey Novak? It has never made sense to me. Not for one moment.

But I didn't let the Casey Hate stop me from being a Casey fan. In fact, it almost made her even that much more endearing. She was the underdog. She was the taboo ADA. If you liked her, you were "other". And that made it fun. For a little while, anyway. But then the Casey Hate got to me. Two years passed since Stephanie left the show and Casey Hate was still going strong. Those of us who preferred Casey found ourselves apologizing or disclaiming our opinions.

"Not that I have anything against Alex, but..."

"I still love Alex, but..."

"I'm just as much of an Alex Cabot fan as the next person, but..."

"Don't get me wrong, I adore Alex, but..."

We Casey fans were natural diplomats, always taking the high road of We have room in our hearts for two ADAs on SVU.

But I can't do that any longer.

I don't see Dick Wolf bending over backwards to do more than the ubiquitous guest role for former ADAs in his shows. Robinette coming back as a defense attorney, Jamie Ross as a judge, and usually as a play for ratings. But Alex Cabot, he gives her a show? Why?

I could say that it could be worse, that they could have just brought Alex back to SVU, either in addition to Casey Novak or getting rid of that character entirely and just bringing back Cabot for good. But once again, I can't do that. Having Alex back in any form is bad enough to me.

From a writer's perspective alone, it is dumbfounding. I have never, EVER seen such a revolving door on Witness Protection as has been used on Alex Cabot. And the writers crowbarred her last "return from the dead" so poorly that the episode read like a bad crime novel. How can they possibly hope to pull this off without it seeming like they've all caught a bad case of Deus ex Machina?

But from a Casey fan's perspective, it is maddening. It isn't bad enough that the Hair Gal has made Casey blonde? It isn't bad enough that the writers fuck Casey over in nearly every episode with regards to her appearances in court? It isn't bad enough that, for two years, the character of Casey Novak has been treated like some sort of human bookmark, holding a place for Alex Cabot, should Stephanie March ever decide to come back?

And now that she has come back, now that Alex Cabot will be making her triumphant return, you know two things are going to happen.

1. There will be a crossover episode with SVU.

2. Casey Haters will now feel justified in their hatred.

At this point, I can only pray that we Casey fans will be given some consideration. These are my prayers.

1. Casey will go back to being a redhead.

2. In the inevitable crossover episode, no one will say something like "We always knew you'd be back!" to Alex, either in front of or out of earshot of Casey Novak.

3. Alex Cabot will not be understood to be Casey Novak's boss.

4. Alex Cabot will not treat Casey Novak the way she treated her in "Ghost", if she has any dealings with her at all.

Number three of this list is the most important to me. Why? Because I feel the canon supposition of Alex Cabot as Casey Novak's boss would completely undermine the character of Casey. It will seem to validate all the Alex love and all the Casey hate. Hasn't Casey already had to battle uphill for EVERYTHING, mainly because of Alex? Now she possibly has to deal with Alex as her supervisor, too?

If Alex is understood to be Casey's boss, the assumption is she's better than Casey and she isn't. She just isn't. It puts out there--in canon, no less--"You'll Never Be As Good As Alex. Never."

Who can fight that?

Ugh. Further ramifications of this turn of events are too much for me to contemplate at the moment, especially considering how physically ill I currently am. I am already having nightmarish visions of a plethora of Casey Bashing, A/O reunion fanfic. Which, in deference to my head, I will NOT be reading.

shitashii, dear, if you are reading this, I just want you to know that my generosity with regards to your adoration of SM/AC will not change.

However, I can no longer promise that I will be particularly diplomatic with regards to the character of Alex Cabot in any other venue.

I've come out of the last closet, the one that is likely to get me the most backlash.

I now officially loathe Alex Cabot.

And it's all Dick Wolf's fault.

I'm taking some more Nyquil and am going to try and go back to sleep.

I probably won't always be this upset about this but I am now and I thought it better to be honest about how I feel than to internalize it.

Hugs, dear, for being sick and having to deal with such shitty news. Extra big hugs for having to deal with them both at the same time! What in the hell is Dick Wolf thinking?

Thank you, dear. And as for what DW is thinking, I have no idea.

Profits, probably.

I read that on Yahoo earlier. Is it bad that I thought, "Good, maybe then all the Alex people will give up on SVU and watch that and leave my poor Casey alone?"

I'm glad to hear that you are so optimisitic about this. I hope the show does live up to your expectations.

I personally can't see it being good for Casey, particularly if the writers have a hard enough time doing right by her now.

Maybe they can pull this off. I don't know. But I'm not going to hold my breath.

I don't have any more room in my diet for prime time tv, though I do still think Steph March is hot and if I happen to catch an episode I will tune in. My annoyance with the Casey Haters will be kept to online raging. ;) Well at least, I'll try to keep it here (semi-contained)!

I hope you feel better soon.

I did have more to say about giving into the Casey haters by hating Alex but I ended up going round and round and confusing the hell outta myself. So I won't subject you to that. Instead I'll ask a question that has nothing to do with the rant: what episode was it that Casey interrupted the judges playing poker? and do you know which judges? I can only remember Petrovsky.

I had a feeling someone would make a case for being the "better person" as it were, re: Alex. I played it that way already. But I can't be that person anymore. Besides, Alex has enough fans. One less won't make much of a difference.

No, I don't know off the top of my head which episode that's from. I do believe that Judge Terhune was the host but I can't be positive of that. You should check with Shay. She knows all that stuff.

Casey Hate never really bothered me too much. I'd look at it, acknowledge the reasons, be a bit put off, and move on. To each their own and yada yada yada. In the end, it just made me like Casey more.

I was never that much of a fan of Alex to begin with though. I liked her, sure. But she was never on my top five ADA's list (yes, I have one). But as a character, she didn't feel human enough to me.

But I guess I'm rambling. Again, to each their own. It's a shame that all the Casey Hate has ruined Alex for you, though.

I'm not holding my breath on this show. It will likely be bad for Casey, and possibly not too great for Alex, either.

(Personally, I'd rather see a show about Judge Ross any day...)
seftiri: NovakJusticeseftiri on December 6th, 2005 06:13 pm (UTC)
Well, seeing as the writers aren't doing a bang up job this season with SVU as it is, and seeing as even after two years, Casey Hate still rages on, I don't think I can see a positive coming out of this development.

My appreciation of Alex has been waning for some time now. This was just the end of the line for me.

I agree with you re: Judge Ross. :)

Ok, I guess I'm done lurking...This news has put me in a moral outrage.

Where did you find this out? And what in the name of Casey Novak is DW thinking? Don't we, the Casey supporters, have enough obstacles without him bringing back "the golden girl"? The only potentially positive thing that could come out of this is that DN stops being made up like "Saint Alex". Then again, if Alex is suddenly visited by a teary eyed Olivia, I will officially start some type of riot outside DW office.

Sorry for ranting, and also that you're sick. Get well!

I was online last night when the news came to my inbox via a Yahoo group that I'm subscribed to. Reuters news distributed it about an hour later.

Thank you for the well wishes! I am trying my best to get well asap.

Thank you also for delurking! Please feel free to comment at will! I love comments! ;)

I'd love it if this led to Casey being a redhead again.
Shitshitashii on December 7th, 2005 01:36 am (UTC)
Well, you know how I feel so it's a bit pointless commenting. However, I'm way bored. So commenting naturally ensuses.

Thanks for still respecting my love for Steph. Because, well that's not going to change. And before we get into this I just want you to know that you rock my house down!

A lot has been said and I don't want to repeat myself but I must give a few words in regard to Casey-hate. Casey-hate sucks. It sucks a lot and I'm deeply saddened that it's given Alex fans a tainted name. It really makes us all look bloody stupid.

John Stuart Mills wrote in his book On Liberty that man is falliable and that one would be stupid to supress any opinion. Granted he was talking about communism, but I think his thoughts can be applied here. I wish that people would stop hating Casey just because she's a "replacement," which she's totally not. Hell, I love Alex all over the place, but I still like Casey. A lot actually. It's just that my Alex/Steph love is a bit larger.

So I respect people who dislike Casey for actual concrete good reasons, just as I respect people who dislike Alex for actual good reasons.

And for clarification: Do you loathe Alex Cabot because you actually loathe her or do you hate her because her fans piss you off?

I respect your opinion either way. Hell, I'd hate Alex as a result of her fans if I didn't love her so damn much. I just feel like if I were a huge Casey fan I'd love Casey-haters. Because they just strip Alex fans of any credibility.

I just ignore people that have what I would consider an ignorant opinion. In fact I shake my head and laugh sadly.

So I figure that I just let those people be and carry on with loving both ADAs with a bit more love for Alex. Because I have no real reason to hate Casey. I may have been bitter at first because I missed Alex with a passion, but after a couple amazing Casey episodes I got over it. Plus, she subpoenaed
Donald Rumsfeld. Does it get any better than that?

That was a really long comment, which just goes to show how incredibly bored I really am. So I hope you could follow that. I think I got all I wanted to say out there. But I sort of write how I think which makes expressing myself a bit difficult.

To end: Much love as always!
seftiri: Justiceseftiri on December 7th, 2005 02:59 am (UTC)
And for clarification: Do you loathe Alex Cabot because you actually loathe her or do you hate her because her fans piss you off?

First, Alex was...Alex. Before I knew there were other options, it took me a looooong time to see the subtext between her and Olivia. By the time I had become an A/Oer, the fandom pairing had been around for almost two years. I enjoyed her sarcasm and the little bit of vulnerability that she showed us.

But then there was Casey and Casey was oh-so-much-more.

I wish there was a short answer to your question but there isn't. I loathe the character of Alex because of what she represents. The "golden girl". The perfection. The supposed pinnacle. I loathe her because this is how even the writers have portrayed her in comparison to Casey. And I loathe her now because her "triumphant return", particularly if she is understood to be Casey's boss, can only mean additional hate for Casey.

So basically, a character that I had somewhat ambivalent feelings for to begin with has been held up to represent "perfection" at Casey's expense.

I think my writing says it all. Since 2000, I have written exactly 1 and 1/2 A/O stories. In the last year, I have written 16 already published C/O stories, 10 published drabbles, and I have six more in various stages of completion.

I get Casey. I understand her in a way I never got Alex. And that is probably always going to be so.

Alex has enough fans. I wasn't doing her justice, anyway. Obviously my heart lies elsewhere. She isn't going to miss me.

And I'm not going to miss her.

As always, my dear, I adore you and the love you have for SM/AC. You give her a good name in my eyes.

TrueXena: FUCK - Iyari & Ambertruexena on December 7th, 2005 03:26 pm (UTC)
huh, interesting.

My feelings about this news is uncertain (even in my own mind) so fogive me if I just ramble for a bit. ;o/ (dont worry I dont type fast, and I gotta go pick up my kid in an hour) ;o)

To start lets just explain that until Alex' death, I never saw the A/O thang. But then I saw that last scene with them and was like "OMG" and totally saw it, but I was a tad late in the 'seeing'. I even went back a bunch of episodes to see if I could see it, and I just never did. Tis just that last scene that it totally jumped out at me.

Then we got Casey (who i like better as a red head too, it's better with her complextion). When Alex came back from the dead, I was a bit excited to see her and Olivia interact again. (mainly just to see if the writers would show me more of what I saw in the last scene they had together) I saw a little, but it wasnt enough for me to run out and read A/O fic from the net.

I was already into Casey by this point (even if i didnt see the whole C/O thang either), but the character was just interesting to me. Alex, not as much. I never saw the 'casey hate' happen, cuz I'm just too lazy to deal with idiots, though sHaY was more than willing to explain the hate to me. And explain to me how I needed, no - MUST, do a C/O music vid to "Shove in the Casey Haters faces!"

Mind you I was still not seeing the C/O thang, but sHaY wore me down, and kept pointing out scenes for me to look at. Now I see it. (cuz i'm so blind) ;o)

I still dont get the 'hate' in people for a character that is just there to do her job. But like I said, I dont have time for idiots.

This news about Alex coming back on a new show just messes up my head.

1) Aint Alex in witness protection cuz "there will always be someone out to kill her"

2) Ummm Fuck 2, READ 1!!!!!!

Ok, I know that was harsh, but COME ON!!! This is just insanity on Dick Wolf's part. Wouldn't it be more realistic if he got one of the two chicks from Trial By Jury (who dont have a job now that they canceled that show) to do this new show? Hell just bring Trial By Jury back damnit, they didnt even give that one a fighting chance, and I liked it!

Why Alex? Was she really that good? (I cant seem to remember that she was) Bring back Sirena if you plan on giving someone their job back, geesh. I at least ALWAYS liked her, even before I got blindsided by her last comments on the show. I dont understand the thinking behind this choice. It just baffles me to no end at this point.

I'll not lie and tell you I wont watch this new show, cuz I probably will. I'm not giving it a good shot at making it past the 1st season mark. As it is stated in your 'news' that "Conviction" will be more character driven, and if that is the case, the characters had best be up to par. We L&O fans (me in particular) will shut them off quicker than someone can be marandized, if there is crap characterization. ;o)

Did any of this make sense? Probably not. But those are my thoughts. ;o)

Later dayz,
TX (give a limer a hug)

You know, I took the liberty to look at SM's Resume. Since she left SVU she's had huge roles in the movies like in "Head of State" as Nikki, the 'crazy ass girl'. Or her HUGE role in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" as 'Julie' or 'Associate one'. Clearly, SM has major star power. These roles are definitely for someone of her caliber. *rolls eyes*
