A Banner Day, All Around!!

Okay, I have had a week of nail-biting tension that has finally resolved itself into the bottom line that I am officially e-m-p-l-o-y-e-d.  That's right, boys and girls (girls and girls?  do i have boys that hang out here?  if so, yay!  speak up!), I am now an employee of UNC in Chapel Hill.  I work for the Department of Family Medicine in a groundbreaking program for pregnant women and children under the age of one.  So cool!  But damn, getting a job around here!  HOOPS!  All the hoops!  Christ!

The nail-biting part has been this week.  I had the requisite pee-in-this-minuscule-cup-please drug test (which was, in itself, its own little nightmare no thanks to the technician who does, let's face it, have a thankless little job) the Wednesday before last and waited until Monday of this week to call my HR rep to find out the results.  She said the drug test came back with 'no issues' (no, really?  shocking!) but that she still had to verify my Social Security number.  She said she had to do that through her supervisor but that she was out and would be back in the morning.  She'd call me Tuesday.

Tuesday rolls around.  No word.

Wednesday at 10:30am, I decide to call my HR rep.  Just a friendly little check-in.  "Hi, how are you, did you get that verification back?"  But I get her voicemail.  Okay, no biggie.  I leave a message.

All Wednesday, no word.

Thursday at noon, I call her again.  Have to leave another message.  "Hi there, just want to make sure you got my previous message.  Still waiting for the official word that I can attend orientation on Monday.  Please call."  All Thursday, no word.

Now here's the rub.  If I don't get "cleared" to attend this orientation, happening on Monday the 10th, I have to wait another two weeks to attend the next one.  Even if they clear up the issue on Monday morning, I would have to wait until the next orientation class.  But I missed the last one by one day as well, so I've already waited two weeks.  And let's not even go down the I need money for a trip to Vegas road!  Gah!

Thursday night--probably due to stress--I end up having the aphasic portion of a migraine but no actual head pain.  Still, for those of you who don't know, the aphasia portion of my migraines includes the sudden inability to speak, anger with no focus, typing problems (missing letters in words or too many of the same letter in a word), and weakness/numbness on the right side of my body.  Basically, a stroke but without the actual blood-clot-to-the-brain-permanency.  So what is that--stroke-lite?  I dunno.  All I do know is that it scares the Hell outta Tiff and I'm not too keen on it either.  (Note to Tiff:  I'm sorry, baby!)

So Friday at 1pm (today), I call again.  And lo and behold, her voicemail box is FULL and I can't leave her a message.  But I can wait on the line for further assistance, which I do.  And I get in touch with someone in the office, explain the issue, and she says to me that my HR rep has been out of the office all week unexpectedly and that she'll look into this right away.  Now I was very careful to explain that I wanted to get this cleared up today because I wanted to attend the orientation starting Monday.  She said she understood, would look into it, and would get back to me.

4pm rolls around and NO WORD.  OMG!  Do you know how much work doesn't get done in the last hour of a Friday workday?!?  So I call again and ask for her, give the woman who answers the phone my name, yada yada, and that woman puts me on hold for a moment and then comes back and says "Can I put you on hold for a few moments?  She needs to look into this for you and it's going to take a few moments."

AAAAAAAAAACK!!  What has she been doing for the last THREE HOURS??  But, of course, I politely say yes, please.  Put me on hold.  Figure this out.  Now.

A couple of minutes later, the woman I originally spoke to gets on the phone.  Let's me know that the Social Security verification was apparently not done (no, really?) and that she was going to try to do it now.  ::blink blink::  Yes.  You heard me.  She was going to try to call the Federal Social Security offices at 4:15pm on a Friday afternoon.  Who says prayer is dead?  I sent out the most basic prayer there is, to any and every deity within prayer-shot:  "Help me!  Please!"

And yea, the power of prayer and the idiocy of some n00b in the Social Security office (really, man...who stays in the office until 5pm on a Friday in a government office?) prevails and I am cleared to start work on Monday.

But wait!  There's more!  Not sold in any store!

In other news today, Tiff and I will be attending the NIN concert in Charlotte, NC in June.

Can I repeat that for effect?  Please?  Thank you!

TIFF!!  ME!!  NIN!!  IN JUNE!!  OMG!!

So you can see why I am so happy, right?  I don't have to spell it out or anything?  Good.

Oh, and by the way, oracledelphi617?  I don't plan on getting punched in the jaw or anything but if you'd like to send me a description of the ASSHAT who cost you a tooth, I'd be happy to wail on him if I see him.  Not that I expect he's going to travel to Charlotte, NC to see NIN, but you never know, right? ;)

Okay, I guess it's about time to wrap this long ass post up.

To all of you who sent me good wishes and prayers and whatnot for my employment, I give you my most grateful thanks.  It is official.  I am employed.  Thank you so very much.  :D

::hugs every last one of you::

PS:  I won't lie to you.  There will be more Tiff/NIN squeeage over the next few weeks.  I won't be able to help it.  I know you'll understand.  :D

I so have to be the first to comment, with this:

I think you're just gonna have to get used to me squeeing in comments to your journal, cuz my flist would all prolly de-friend me if I squeed about this second NIN concert for the next two months. I'm sure most of them had more than enough NIN before the first one. Sheesh! And LOLOL.

::is so fucking excited!!::

First and foremost, congratulations on the job! It sounds like something you could really fall in love with and help you make a couple bucks...so right-o!

Second, NIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Trent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quite possibly the only man in the entire universe I'd switch teams for in a heartbeat...hence the icon. I hope you enjoy the show, it truly is an experience (without the jaw-punchage) worth having.

Description of the asshat, eh? Umm, skinny white boy wearing lots of black? Honestly, I didn't give him a full second's worth of attention during the concert itself - I doubt I would recognize him if he were staring me in the face right now.

Plus, let's face it, my story of that night? Way more kickass...and frightening for people who see me and think "choir-girl." (which, as I think Tiff can attest, is the case no matter how well you know me - I look innocent and naive for whatever reason)

Squee away, we'll understand. :)

Thank you for the congrats on the job. I'm so excited!! Once again, I can contribute to society and its success. And working with underprivileged pregnant women? The perfect spot at the moment. :)

And second, you do have a point about the story vs. the choir-girl image. I like it. I have what I call the librarian image. Perhaps me getting slugged in the jaw would help that too? ;)

Just kidding. Tiff wouldn't like that very much at all. LOL

No, I kinda don't think that Tiff would enjoy it so much... :)

You know what sucks? Forgetting to reply to comments because of a new job... I suck!!

Sorry I didn't respond sooner...

Thanks for the congrats! And NIN is Nine Inch Nails, the band fronted by Trent Reznor. :D
